.Background: In the 1960s, the United States Military’s design requirements called for an all-weather, low-altitude, high-speed tactical bomber capable of long-range strikes. Meanwhile, the Navy needed a long-endurance fleet air defense interceptor. However, various development issues led to the cancellation of the Navy’s version (the F-111B), and the F-111 was ultimately adopted only by the Military.
The F-111 not only served as a tactical/strategic bomber (FB-111) but also spawned an electronic warfare variant (EF-111A). The aircraft began development in 1960 and made its first flight in 1967. During the initial months of deployment in Vietnam, several F-111s crashed due to inherent problems, leading pilots to nickname it “Aardvark.” However, after several rounds of major overhauls and improvements, the engine’s roar during supersonic low-altitude attacks and its powerful, precise strike capabilities earned it the nickname “Whispering Death” from the North Vietnamese.
When the U.S. Military retired all its F-111s in 1998, their tactical bombing role was taken over by the F-15E “Strike Eagle,” and the supersonic strategic bombing role was taken over by the B-1 Lancer. After the U.S. retired the F-111, the Royal Australian Military (RAAF) continued to operate the aircraft, incorporating retired American F-111Gs to maintain their strike capabilities. On December 3, 2010, the RAAF held a formal retirement ceremony for the F-111, replacing it with 24 newly acquired F/A-18F aircraft. This event marked the end of the F-111’s active service life.
