The German F122 frigates were in service from 1982 to 1990. The design is based on the proven and robust Dutch Kortenaer-class, but with different propulsion systems and hangar layouts. These ships were primarily built for anti-submarine warfare, although they were not equipped with towed array sonar. They also feature anti-surface warfare equipment and a point-defense system for air defense.
