MOC-81651 Reko Post Wagen
History of Deutsche Reichsbahn
“Like the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), the DR had to cope with a severe shortage of wagons after the Second World War and the massive obsolescence of passenger cars in the 1970s. Three and four-axle wagon carriages of Prussian and Saxon design, as well as by the large number of front and rear two-axle wagons of the First World War still made up the bulk of that vehicle fleet for passenger and express trains. The few double-decker trains procured for urban and commuter traffic, as well as the new central entrance cars of the 1950s, were not sufficient to update and restore the less advanced passenger equipment, not least because their maintenance also meant increased expenditure. Just like the converted wagons of the 1950s DB, the DR also began to modernise its pre-war wagons – this was known as rebuilding. So large was the number that by the mid-1970s more than half of all DR passenger cars were reko cars.
Originally all Reko cars were painted dark green with grey roofs and a thin white trim stripe below the windows similar to modern cars, with a black stripe at shoe height. Both were discarded when they were repainted in the late 1970s. the chrome oxide green paint introduced in 1984 was only used on a few four-axle vehicles. However, as a result of their use on express train services, from 1984 onwards many semi-luggage cars were painted in chrome oxide green/beige.”
From The Designer-Langemat
“Reko” coaches are railway wagons made of remains of railway wagons from the pre-war period. Due to a shortage of materials, the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR was forced to reuse parts of the old wagons. With reconstruction (short “Reko” in German) wasn’t meant restoration or reproduction of an earlier state, but a thorough modernization.
There are “Reko” coaches with 2, 3 and 4 axles.
More details of this specific coaches you can read here: Reko Wagon
The MOC-81650 represents a 3-axle variant from the early 1960’s. Due to the total length of the MOC, the front and rear axle are steerable, so passing curves and turnouts is not an issue. Additionally, the middle axle is flexible as well and will move to the right or left side in curves and turnouts.
The interior (seats) is implied only, to give the steering mechanism enough space (function before design approach).
