A Tribute to the Heroes of 9/11 Through a Detailed FDNY Rescue Vehicle MOC
When people collect models, they often collect more than just an object.
Some builds represent engineering.
Some represent history.
And some represent the people and stories behind them.
The 1996 HME 1871 – Saulsbury Ex-Rescue 5 FDNY building block model is one of those meaningful creations. Based on the real FDNY Rescue 5 heavy rescue truck, this model recreates a historic emergency vehicle connected to one of the most significant moments in modern history — the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Designed by Silver Ridge, this detailed fire truck MOC is not only a display model but also a tribute to the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of firefighters and first responders.
The Real Story Behind FDNY Rescue 5
The original vehicle was a 1996 HME / Saulsbury rescue apparatus assigned to FDNY Rescue Company 5 in Staten Island.
FDNY Rescue Companies are specialized units trained for some of the most challenging emergency situations, including technical rescue, collapse rescue, hazardous environments, and complex operations. These vehicles are often described as mobile toolboxes because they carry a large amount of specialized rescue equipment.
The 1996 HME Saulsbury rescue trucks were part of a fleet created for FDNY rescue companies. Rescue 5 operated one of these vehicles, known as SR9605.
On September 11, 2001, Rescue 5 responded to the World Trade Center alongside other FDNY rescue units.
That day, firefighters from Rescue 5 entered one of the most dangerous rescue operations in history. The company suffered a devastating loss, with 11 members of its crew lost while responding to the World Trade Center.
The story of Rescue 5 remains a reminder of the courage and commitment shown by firefighters who put themselves in danger to help others.
A 9/11 Tribute Model Built With Respect
The FDNY Rescue 5 building block model recreates the recognizable features of the original HME Saulsbury rescue truck.
Rather than simply creating another fire truck model, this MOC focuses on preserving the identity and details of the real vehicle.
Key features include:
- Authentic FDNY Rescue 5 inspired design
- Detailed rear rescue compartments
- SCBA equipment storage area
- Additional equipment storage sections
- Faithful recreation of the original rescue vehicle appearance
Every section of this model tells part of the story — from the equipment compartments used by firefighters to the overall structure of the rescue apparatus.
Why Collectors Value Historical Vehicle Models
For many collectors, historical models are meaningful because they connect craftsmanship with real-world stories.
A fire truck MOC is not only about building techniques or display value. It can represent:
- The history of emergency services
- The dedication of firefighters
- Important moments remembered by communities
- The machines that supported heroes during critical missions
Similar to military aircraft, classic vehicles, and architecture models, emergency vehicles allow builders to preserve a piece of history in a unique way.
Building a Memorial Piece Brick by Brick
The 1996 HME 1871 Saulsbury Ex-Rescue 5 FDNY model offers builders the opportunity to recreate a historically significant rescue vehicle while learning about the story behind it.
For FDNY supporters, firefighter families, emergency service enthusiasts, and collectors of unique vehicle models, this MOC represents more than a display piece.
It is a reminder to honor those who served, remember those who were lost, and appreciate the courage of first responders.
